Blog post numero uno for earth day 14 February in the year of our Lord 2014.
Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. A holiday in the US where we let our loved ones know how much we care for them by giving them jewelry, sweets, flowers, and a nice dinner. That pleasant thought makes you want to experience Valentine's Day everyday.
Well, on this month and day in the year of our Lord 278, Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed. Why, you may ask? For secretly marrying couples against the decree of the Emperor. Claudius thought that if he prevented men from marrying they would be willing to join his army which he needed in support of his empire building campaigns. The mythology is that for his offense, Valentine was clubbed then beheaded. Furthering his romantic moniker, the legend states he left a note for the jailer's daughter who he had befriended during his unfortunate incarceration, signing it, "From Your Valentine."
That's just one of the more popular stories about how it became one of America's biggest commercialized holidays.
Hope you all had a great day even if you don't celebrate the holiday.
